Review: Moonlight Chicken

Moonlight chicken

A MASTERPIECE with overflowing human emotions expressed in a practical way. You could find every character in this series around you.

One of my top 10, made me rewatch twice. Such a classy one, when brilliance of acting and making  go hand in hand, something like this should definitely be born.

In the world of bl, this was actually a gamechanger. Kudos to the writer, directer, the whole crew and the artists for this wonderful piece, that to be completed in just 8 episodes.

The story starts during postcovid era with the difficulties faced by the common people. Uncle Jim(Earth), who owns a chicken rice diner (mainly sells during night) which is pretty famous for its affordability and taste. So one day he encounters a drunk guy named Wen(Mix) in his diner. May be the weather and their first encounter was an attraction to each other, an unexpected one night stand is drilling into their deepest desires. The first episode itself made me book a seat for this series.

The chemistry between Earth and Mix were boiling from the 1st episode(it was so pleasing to watch, the passion in their eyes for each other is no joke!!!)… The whole scenes of them wandering the alley was beautifully absorbed, the beauty of moonlight, calmness and sweetness of the night and the passionate looks in their eyes. Especially the BACKGROUND MUSIC(during the love scene) just made me fall in love with them(i would have fell in love with anyone with that bgm around).

As the series goes on, a one night stand is getting complicated and intricating  their lives to dig up pure emotions. How they are getting to know each other, how they are healing and completing each other’s missing pieces are so captivating. I loved Mix so much, his yearning eyes and stubborness for Earth was ardent. How important it is to let go of the past that is holding us back, to have a beautiful future ahead may be the message that was delivered by Wen and Jim. If you are already an EarthMix fan, then this is gonna be the best treat for u.

The next best duo for me was Li ming(Fourth) and Heart (Gemini). They are highschoolers but taught us the maturity and bravesness to do the right thing and follow our dream. Heart who lost his hearing due to some cause, Gem done a wonderful job and nailed the character and Li ming, who is absolutely brave to show his thoughts and follow his dream was well potrayed by Fourth(to me he was the nicest character). Their sign language interaction and getting to know each other part was so captivating.

They really carried the role with maturity. Heart’s parents roles were nicely handled and a loud meassage was given out by the team. I also love Wen and Li ming’s & Uncle jim and nephew Li ming’s interactions. Jim and Li ming taught each other and Li ming helped his uncle to become bolder.

Alan, a bank manager and wen’s exboyfriend was handled by First. He was so fantastic!!!. He was so emotional and his acting was so perfect and a level better than everyone. Wen and first showed how adjusting to a relationship to please the other one can do to relationships, It is not adjustment but it is understanding which is needed in a relationship.

Kaipa(Khaotung), a chicken seller,he was a very good support to uncle Jim. His and his mother’s scenes were so loving. Kaipa’s mother’s role was greatly handled and had a warmth in it. Khao has gone through a lot of emotions in this series with great acting, especially in the last few episodes.

Saleng (Mark) and Praew(View) were also having good chemistry. P’ Looka played Jim’s sister ( Li ming’s mother)had an important role.

So many guest characters were also present and done a wonderful job.

All these characters played important pieces in these series.

Final Thoughts

Just 8 episodes,P’Aof(the well known magician) and the crew made absolute magic  with a simple story, potraying basic human emotions. So i would suggest this as a must watch for all the bl addicts out there. In the world of bl, this exactly was a gem and this masterpiece bagged so many awards, which was well deserving. One of the best series of 2023, we cannot  tag it just in bl category, can be considered as a milestone in Thai series industry.
